International Day of Action to denounce the human rights abuses in OaxacaFriday December 22, 2006 2:00 PMMexican Consulate 1234 SW Morrison & 4:00pm @ Holladay Park (Lloyd Center) 12th and NE MultnomahIn May of 2006, teachers in Oaxaca went on strike, demanding better wages, as well as shoes and food for children. The Governor ordered the state police to break up the strike with excessive force resulting in death. Outraged, the Popular Assembly of the People (APPO) of Oaxaca and other citizens rose up and demanded the resignation of the Governor. Over the past few months this struggle has become a general struggle for all people in Oaxaca. The Governor has responded by ordering paramilitary forces to arrest, detain and torture suspected APPO members. The Consulate continues to deny any human rights abuses in Oaxaca, even after reports by human rights watch groups like Amnesty International. Come join Oregon Oaxaca Solidarity in a two part action on Dec 22nd. From the Consulate there will be a Procession on the Max ending with Street Theater at Holladay Park at Lloyd center.
