Candlelight Vigil for Fairness at Providence

expired

Mar 21, 2007 10:00 PM

Providence Portland Medical Center, 47th & NE Glisan

The Workers' Rights Board, the Fair Election Oversight Commission and many other community groups and leaders are calling on Providence Health & Services to discontinue its documented bullying practices and allow workers to openly discuss forming a union by agreeing to basic ground rules for union elections.  These ground rules consist of:

  • Make sure precious health care resources are not wasted on expensive consultants who specialize in campaigns designed to interfere in employees’ freedom to choose whether to form a union.   (Providence has hired Jackson Lewis one of the nations most prominent and nasty union busters!)
  • Ensure that employees are not pulled away from their patients and forced to attend intimidating meetings with their supervisors.
  • To allow for open discussion in the hospitals, so that employees are free to meet and have access to factual and truthful information.
  • Refrain from negative campaigning, misleading communications, and heavy-handed tactics that will only create tension and conflict in the hospitals and community.

After the hearing of the Jobs with Justice Workers’ Rights Board Fair Election Oversight Commission hearing in May, (chaired by Secretary of State, Bill Bradbury) the board was convinced that workers absolutely need to get fair election ground rules with Providence because the workers need to have a fair process from the beginning. This way people can participate fully and feel safe that they aren’t risking their job.
