AFSCME Local 1995 Fair Contract Rally
Thursday June 7, 2007 4:00 PM
Multnomah Education Service District headquarters office in the Ainsworth Building at 11611 NE Ainsworth Circle.
Join us in support of AFSCME Local 1995 (MESD)
AFSCME Local 1995 is having a tough go of it since they
opened new contract negotiations in December. (Yes, it seems like we just went
through this yesterday.) Local leaders have planned a rally next Thursday, June
7, beginning at 4 p.m. and going until 7.
MESD
Superintendent Dr. Ed Schmidt
says there simply isn’t any extra money to give to Local 1995 members. Perhaps
he’s telling the truth — since he’s
collecting so much of it himself!
While Local 1995 has members who pay anywhere from 20 to 50
percent of their salaries towards health care benefits, Schmidt pays
three-tenths of 1 percent (0.3) for his. Additionally, he recently negotiated
from the MESD Board an extra $100 per month to “help” with his out-of-pocket
health care expenses. That extra $100 is on top of Schmidt’s $148,000 annual
salary, $4,800 annual car allowance and a $12,500 per year tax-deferred annuity
that MESD pays on top of his PERS pension benefit.
“But when we ask for ‘help,’ the Board’s bargaining
representative tells us if our members can’t afford to live with this income,
maybe they should find another job,” says Council 75 staff representative Issa Simpson, who has MESD and Local
1995 as part of her assignment.
The Local 1995 Fair Contract Rally will be held at the
Multnomah Education Service District headquarters office in the Ainsworth
Building at 11611 NE Ainsworth Circle. To get there, go north on I-205 and take
the Airport Way East exit (Exit 24-B) and follow Airport Way east to the corner
of Ainsworth Circle. For more information on the rally, contact Council 75’s Rodney McCambridge or Issa Simpson at issa@oregonafscme.com
