MESD Strike Kick Off Rally

Friday November 30, 2007 7:00 AM

11611 NE Ainsworth (I-205 N. Airport Way East exit)

AFSCME Local 1995 Multnomah Education

VS Service District

Why do we need your help?

Our contract has been expired since June 30. AFSCME Local 1995 Members overwhelmingly voted on November 13 to authorize a strike. AFSCME has given notice of strike for November 30 at 12:01 am. The District needs to understand that by most people’s standards in this community, many of our members do not take home a living wage.

It's gotta get fixed !

  • One third (115) of our members work on part time status with prorated benefits.

  • The vast majority of our part time members and many of our full timers hold second and third jobs- impacting their own families.

  • Supervisors and administrators pay about 2% of their income for insurance while our members pay up to 27% of their income.

  • MESD’s budget received a 17% increase and they haven’t increased their proposal to us since that time.

  • Even key legislators are frustrated with MESD administration’s unwillingness to share the increase in the budget with our Members.

  • AFSCME Members have shared the pain of the District’s past budget woes for years-even proposing a 5 day closure (no pay for our members) a few years ago to save money for the District. We are not seeing the level of commitment from the District to employees that these Members have shown the District and the kids we serve.

What do our 350 members do?

  • Provide direct support to special needs and at risk youth-work one on one in classrooms.

  • Provide administrative and technical support to school districts in the Metro area.

What Can You Do?

Show up on Friday November 30 at the MESD Ainsworth Bldg for a strike kickoff rally.
