Take Action to Support Farm Workers!
UFW workers in California need your help!
Action Alert from Oregon Farm Workers' Minsitry:
Please call Young Columbia Distributing 503-289-9600 to support the UFW Boycott of KRUG-MONDAVI.
Suggested message:
I join United Farm Workers' supporters across the country in boycotting all Krug-Mondavi wine labels until the company renegotiates a contract for its vineyard workers. I ask you, as the distributor of Krug-Mondavi in Oregon to honor the UFW's boycott of Krug-Mondavi. Further, I ask you to let Krug-Mondavi know you have received this call and that your customers want them to negotiate in good faith with the UFW workers.
I will not buy products from a company that is vowing to fire all its vineyard workers--many of them with years of loyal service. I am disturbed to learn that at the same time Krug-Mondavi is pleading poverty and vowing to fire the workers, the winery is spending $21.6 million for capital improvements on 850 acres of prime Napa Valley vineyards.
Thank you for your time.
Background:
-
Krug-Mondavi has resisted union representation for their workers since the first UFW election at the company in 1975:
- They took 6 years to agree to the first union contract in 1981.
- They took 9 years to negotiate a contract from 1991 - 2000.
- Now Krug-Mondavi is vowing to fire all its vineyard workers, many of whom have years of loyal service, rather than renew their union contract.
- Krug-Mondavi says they will turn over operations to a land manager as a cost-savings measure, but at the same time the winery is spending $21.6 million for capital improvements on their Napa Valley vineyards.
As 29-year veteran Krug Mondavi worker Aurelio Solorio says, "The company simply wants to do away with our union that has represented us and fought for our benefits. The company wants to implement a younger work force that will carry lower wages, no benefits, and will hold a lesser amount of knowledge of their labor rights."
Please make you call in the next few days. Also please forward any and all responses to ofwm@earthlink.net as we will be forwarding that info to the union. ¡Muchas Gracias y Si Se Puede!
