Republicans begin assault on working families
Under the guise of fiscal responsibility, the Republicans fired the first shot in their post election assault on working families according to the Oregonian today. Republicans say that they won't extend Unemployment Insurance without budget cuts to pay for them. Without an UI extension by November 30, over 2 million workers will lose the very benefits necessary for survival.
We can expect to hear cries from the Right of fiscal responsibility whenever when it comes to programs benefiting working people until the 2012 election and beyond. Of course when it comes to war, fat tax breaks for business and the wealthy and sweet deals for banks and big oil, fiscal responsibility will give way to arguments about national security and economic necessity.
Nationally, Jobs with Justice plans a 30 day campaign to fight for an extension of Unemployment Insurance and Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF), another vital program for hard pressed working families.
