Responding to the Raids

Here's how you can help!

Dear JwJ Pledger:

I know many of you want to help the folks affected by Tuesday's ICE raids. While stuff is still coming together, and immigrant activists are mostly in crisis mode, I wanted to send out info on some of the resources available, and ways people can help.

1) Donate to a relief fund for families:
Make checks payable to "El Programa Hispano- Catholic Charities"  and in the memo line put "raid relief".  Checks can be mailed to:  451 NW 1st St, Gresham, OR 97030
Also, the group working on Sanctuary is setting up such a fund.  Donations can be made to AFSC, earmarked YLMB-Sanctuary. Mail to: AFSC 2249 E. Burnside,  Portland, OR 97217

2) Write a letter to the editor
Anti-immigrant responses are flooding local papers in response to their coverage of the ICE raids. Stand up for the affected children and families today - talking points are below.  You can submit your letter to:
Oregonian:  letters@news.oregonian.com
Statesman Journal:  letters@statesmanjournal.com

3) Call the mayor
The mayor's office is working hard to help with resources and information.  While Mayor Potter has received a few kudos for his strong statement in outrage over the raids, his phone is ringing off the hook with angry anti-immigrant calls.  Please take a few minutes to call and thank Mayor Potter for his stance.
Mayor Tom Potter

E-mail: mayorpotter@ci.portland.or.us

Stop the Raids - Talking Points

If it is lawful for ICE officers to separate little children from their mothers then something is dreadfully wrong with our immigration system.

What a terrible contradiction that as the Senate debates passing a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would include a pathway to citizenship the Administration is arresting, detaining, and deporting the same immigrants this legislation would help.

These aggressive and far-reaching raids have disrupted the lives of thousands of families. We are at a crossroads as a nation in deciding what kind of country we want to be and how we value family unity, community, and the rights of children.

This aggressive attempt to instill fear simply underscores the urgent need for Congressional leaders to act swiftly and boldly on passing a comprehensive immigration reform bill that is fair and just and brings immigrant workers out of the shadows of our society and onto a path to citizenship.

ICE raids separate little children from their mothers. The damage caused by these actions will cause long-term trauma to thousands of children.

The stepped up arrest and detention of immigrant mothers and father, many who have been contributing to this country and their communities for many years, has only succeeded in polluting the problem and sending a terrible message to the nation and to the world.
