Union machinists at Freightliner this morning approved a three-year contract, and some members were expected to return to the Portland truck plant this afternoon after a week-long strike. Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 1005 voted 451-153 to accept the deal. The new contract includes pay increases, a reduction in employee health-insurance contributions and a job-security provision in case of the plant's sale or closure. Freightliner makes an average of 38 Western Star brand and military trucks at the plant each day. Workers had gone on strike over a phaseout of retiree health insurance and a mandatory overtime provision.
